Topic: Sentence Types

Hello everyone,

Some of you might be wondering what could have been done to improve your writing skills. Other than good grammar, applying various sentence types is another brilliant way to polish your writing. Not only it shows your ability to write well to express your idea, this sophisticated technique will surely attract readers and examiner into reading your essay. Here are the 4 major sentence types that you should know;

1. Simple sentences
- A simple sentence contains 3 basics elements

 i) a subject ii) a verb iii) a complete thought/object
- Simple sentence is also referred as "Independent Clause" , sentence that can stand alone
Example: She eats a plate of fried noodles
-She (subject) eats (verb) a plate of fried noodles (object)

2. Compound sentences
- A compound sentence has two independent clauses
- Independent clauses are joined by a conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so / FANBOYS)
Example: Sally didn't like to eat vegetables but she enjoyed eating fruits and nuts.
- Sally didn't like to eat vegetables (independent clause 1) but she enjoyed eating fruits and nuts. (independent clause 2)

3. Complex sentences
- A complex sentence is an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses
- "Dependent clause" is either lacks a subject or a verb or that does not express a complete thought.
- Complex sentence always has a subordinator (as, because, since, after, although, when) or relative pronouns (who, that, which).
Example: Before going to school this morning, Zachary ate breakfast that his mother prepared.
- Before going to school this morning (dependent clause 1) Zachary ate breakfast (independent clause) that his mother prepared.(dependent clause 2)

4. Compound-complex sentences
- A compound-complex sentence has two independent clauses (compound) and at least one dependent clause.
Example: Since her grandparent passed away, Marry didn't talk much to anybody and she preferred to be on her own lately.
- Since her grandparent passed away (dependent clause), Marry didn't talk much to anybody (independent clause 1) and (conjunction) she preferred to be on her own.(independent clause 2)

Thus, it is important for students to be able to apply variety of sentence types in their writing to make sure the essay is well written and matured at the same time. Too many usage of simple sentences will make your writing rather "choppy" and too many compound sentences can weaken the writing. Please consider applying some complex and compound-complex sentences in your masterpiece from now on :)

Cheers, till next time

Question: Start your story by 'I began by throwing out all the unnecessary woods....'

Sample answer:

I began by throwing out all the unnecessary woods to the bank of the nearby river. It was getting colder as winter would start in about two weeks from now. Father asked me to collect as many woods as possible for our fireplace at home, so it would be a good preparation to keep our house warm and comfortable. I chopped some logs and picked up those woods from the forest to be brought back home and this wouldn’t be easy without the help of my younger brother, Alex. After we finished, I exhaled my deep breath as a sign of exhaustion from all the work. The clear warm smoke was puffed out of my lungs through my nostrils and mouth. It was such a relief that the task for today had finally done.

‘Let’s head back home’ I spoke to Alex and he nodded obediently.

We hopped on to our father’s carriage full with the woods we collected earlier and I kicked the seat to give a signal to Black, our beautiful horse to start riding us home. As we were heading to our small cottage, I just realised how depressing and sad the environment was getting as the trees were mostly bald with barely some leaves left on. The breeze was very chilly when it blew to my bare face, it caused me to catch a sneeze and my body shivered a little. I hated that autumn almost came to an end and winter would arrive sooner than I realised as it reminded me of something. A dark, cold and vicious moment - a terrible memory which I wished I never had. Alex noticed that I caught a flu and said ‘Surely it isn’t your favourite season after all.’ I looked away and pretended that I was fine as I didn’t want to show my little weakness to him. It was my true nature to appear stronger and superior to my other siblings as I was the eldest son in the family even though I would doubt myself sometimes.

From far, I could see the grey smoke went out from our little house’s chimney. After half an hour of riding, we safely arrived home. Then, I ordered Alex to put and arrange the woods we collected in front our small barn beside the house so that they could be reached easily whenever we need them soon. I entered the house and saw my youngest sister, Lily, was busy cooking us dinner. She looked at me and smiled. ‘How’s everything?’ she asked. I didn’t reply her immediately as I was taking off my thick jacket then hanging it on a hook that attached to the wall. ‘It was fine’ I answered briefly. But deep in my heart I knew that I hid something miserable. The fear that I would never be able to unleash just because I was a grown-up man, the hope, the jewel of the family.

The sun was about to set and the dark sky was ready to take over the day. While waiting for dinner, I had a dark flashback about that unforgettable memory, 16 years ago during winter. I could see vividly how my mother was struggling with her own life to give birth to our little sister, Lily. It was fresh in my mind that the house was freezing cold as it was snowing heavily outside that had hindered the midwife to come by to assist my mother’s delivery. My mother was shouting in pain and she was getting weaker as she had lost a lot amount of energy and blood. Yes, the thick red blood was all over her bed. My father was there beside her, trying his best to calm her down and accompany her patiently to pass through that critical moment. I could see tears swelled up in my mother’s eyes as she suffered enough from the pain. I couldn’t help but to cry over her suffering but I got to be strong and I tried to look after Alex who was only 3 years old and understood nothing. A few moments later, there was a loud sound of crying baby and it gave us a moment of relief. It was the sign that I knew mother had safely delivered our little sister. But little did I know that she did not make it that long after she held Lily in her arms…

‘Brother let’s eat!’ uttered Lily to me and I was taken aback to the reality.
‘Are you okay?’ Alex asked as he puzzled.
I took a little time to adjust my feelings and I nodded weakly, hiding my sorrow away from my siblings.

Then, I looked at the window to only realised that it was totally dark out there. A quick question jumped out of my mouth ‘Where is father?’ I asked nervously. Lily and Alex shrugged and looked at each other, noting that they did not have any clue. ‘He probably went out for hunting a deer’ replied Lily positively. My mind was tangled with many possibilities. He never went out from the house this late and it was too dangerous to be alone in the forest at night. I began to feel worried and a spine-chilling thought had crept into my mind. I started to think that the worse nightmare could happen again this time. He might be kidnapped by a group of evil horseman for ransom or worst he might be killed and eaten by a wild beast. My whole body felt numb and I hardly breathed as usual. 'Is father gone too?' I asked myself. My heartbeat stopped and the house seemed to be dark from every corner like the same situation I had when mother left us...

A sudden bang of the front door swept away all my unwanted imagination. It was father carrying a small deer to the kitchen. I closed my eyes to restore my faith. The silly thought of losing everyone I love was too overwhelming whenever winter was coming. But now I was beyond grateful to God from the very bottom of my heart and said a little inner prayer ‘Dear Lord, I’m not ready to lose him like I lost my beloved mother and I’m afraid that I still in need of him to build me as a man. Don’t let him leave us too early. I love him..’

‘Father, let’s eat. Dinner is getting cold’ I said to my father warmly and I grinned at him from ear to ear. He looked at my odd face with full of questions. Surely he had no idea how anxious I was just now.

A cordial welcome to everybody!

Tuesday, 31 March 2020

Salam and good day everyone!

Well, how do I start this? *speechless*

I’ve been contemplating a lot about to start up this blog and now it's finally happening just like a dream comes true :) Alhamdulillah. It's my biggest hope that this medium will be a huge help for English learners to improve and be consistent in their learning journey.

It's my true concern to notice that Malaysian students have a massive problem in expressing themselves in English. Reflecting back to my old days in primary and secondary school, I think I was nothing different from this cliche stereotype as I also lacked of confidence and hardly felt encouraged to practice this language. But why this poor circumstance is still happening now in this era, especially to the generation Z?

The first major factor that I discovered is probably the narrow-minded that certain groups possess. Let's just admit how a negative surrounding isn't much of help to provide a better encouragement for people to practice English. I found it gruelling that some people tend to intimidate or belittle those who try to speak and practice English. It seems that these people have never felt apologetic to this kind of shameful behaviour. It has caused detrimental effect as it destroys someone's self-esteem and also degrades someone's interest towards this language. This should stop on the instant.

Dear students, it's not about showing off how good you are at this language, rather it's all about encouraging one another to be better at it. I'm pretty sure that it could be a well off surrounding when our mindsets are ready for a significant change towards positivity and acceptance. Let's change the environment to a better place for everyone to learn and improve.  Do indulge in this positive surrounding and find supportive friends who would help you to grow and most importantly don't let the naysayers stop you becoming the best version of you. Improvement starts from continuous practice as a saying 'Practice makes perfect'. So, keep it up!

Mastering English language isn't as easy as ABC. I got to confess that even now as an English teacher I had a little problems in a certain area. In fact, natives do some mistakes sometime. It is a long process that will take you years to actually be really good at it. For Malaysian students, it's their biggest fear to face the challenges to learn the language. You can probably tell how many students hate learning grammar and  finding writing an essay is tiresome due to lacking of skills and knowledge.

Occasionally, students keep doing the same mistakes over and over even though the teacher has corrected them for multiple times which can be repetitive and boring! haha. But this is what the learning process is all about. It's either you take things for granted or actually take the lesson into your heart. It's eventually getting a lot easier if you realised, mistakes are actually the key for mastery the language. You learned from them a lot and they helped you improve from time to time. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day. So, keep practicing English and never give up!

Believe it or not, your attitude towards English can indirectly boost your language proficiency. It's so amazing that many students managed to do well in this subject due to their certain hobbies or preferences. Some may find listening to English songs is the best way they could learn the language. This is possible when learners find some meaningful lyrics from songs that they can literally understand and relate to their emotion and situation. While others may find it favourable to watch English movies or series on TV. Whatever it is, do find your suitable method that can be a great stimulant to develop a better engagement towards this language. It's try and error experiment!

I remember how I used to be so fanatic to some English songs when I was in secondary school. Among the first few songs that I was introduced were 'Unfaithful' by  Rihanna, 'Hot and cold' by Katty Perry and other great singers like Taylor Swift and the boybands like Backstreet boys and Westlife. I also remember how I was such a big fan of Hannah Montana series which I laughed a lot at their silly jokes and how the characters behaved to each other. These platforms were very impactful in my learning process and how it gave me a different perspective to escape my small box and explore a wider world. So, learning is not only limited in classroom or reading books. You have to find out as many mediums as possible to let change happen in your learning experience.

Me talking to Mr. Krusty from the Simpsons hehe :)

Overall, when there's a will, there's always a way. Given some advice above,  you can start thinking and reflecting on ways you can do to improve your English language. People often argued that being good in language doesn't necessarily prove your intelligence. Well, for me it can be true to some extent. But little did we realise how language actually brings a colossal impact to our world. Language is the most effective method in delivering brilliant ideas we have in our mind. How could we channel our fantastic and intelligent thoughts to the world if we couldn't even speak a language properly? How could we gain people's trust if we cannot convince them by our words? There's no doubt that it's language that plays the role :) All the best people! xxx

Till next time :)
